Mobile phone + Holux M-1000 = GPS logger

This method is the cheapest but requires few steps in setup of software. The basic idea is to turn your mobile into a GPS logger. I will go through the procedures step by step. The following guide may be little bit long. Please be patient. Once you followed the procedures, you will not need to look at this guide any more.

If you don't want to setup any software in your mobile phone, you may try BT-Q1000 GPS logger.

A. Requirement:

1.      A mobile phone supports Bluetooth and J2ME

2.      Bluetooth GPS receiver Holux M-1000

- Buy Holux M-1000 from http://www.webtracker.hk/webtracks/web-shop.php (HK$350 with free shipping)

3.      TrekBuddy ( http://www.linuxtechs.net/kruch/tb/ )

- TrekBuddy is free J2ME application for GPS navigation and tracking. We use it for GPS logging only.

4.      Your own stopwatch (Optional).

It seems there is much equipment need to carry. Look at the pictures blew. It can be packed in your hand tightly with a phone case.

B. Installation:

TrekBuddy 0.9.71 download link
Requirements Installation Configuration

C. Setup:

You don’t need to setup TrekBuddy for navigation. Please follow the following steps for GPS logger only.

Start TrekBuddy -> Setting -> Location :

1.      “Provider” -> select “Bluetooth”

2.      Tracklog” -> select “always”

3.      Tracklog Format” -> select “NMEA 0183”

Press “OK” -> select “Options” -> “Save” and “Apply”

Select “Start” -> It will search for “Bluetooth GPS”.

Select “HOLUX_M-1000” and select “Connect”

If it shows “Failed to start tracklog: java.io.IOException: Path of the file does not exist”, you need to create the paths for track log yourself.

Please create the folder “TrekBuddy”, then sub folder “tracks-gpx” and “tracks-nmea” in your memory card.

Each time when you start TrekBuddy, the default security setting of your mobile phone will show the following messages.

To disable the messages, you need to alter the security setting of the application.

Tools -> App. Mgr. -> select “TrekBuddy” -> select “Suit setting” -> select

1. Connectivity -> select “Always allowed”

2. Read user data -> select “Always allowed”

3. Edit user data -> select “Always allowed”

If it works, it will show the following screen.

The “R” means it is recording.

The green spot means the GPS signal is fixed.

D. Operation:

If you use stopwatch to time your laps, you have to calibrate your stopwatch with the GPS receiver before you start your workout. Why? It is because it needs to tell www.webtracker.hk your start time. If you are failing in calibrating your stopwatch, your outcome may be different from your actual timing.

Open your browser, go to http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com. Click “Click here to manually re-synchronize the clock” first. You will see the following screen. Set the time of your stopwatch.

Now you are on the field, turn on your mobile phone and the GPS receiver. It will start recording your tracks.

Remember to check the “R” sign and the green spot.

When your workout is started, remember your start time and time your laps as usual. But if you forget your start time or even forget to time your laps, what can you do? Don’t worry. You can get the start time and lap time through watching the animation of your tracks. See here for details.

After you complete your training, connect your mobile phone to PC and download the track log.

The NMEA track log should be located in your phone memory card.

Open I.E or FireFox, go to http://www.webtracker.hk and logon your account.

Go to “Upload Tracks”, select the track log and enter the title of your activity.

If you have recorded your lap time, please enter the start time and lap time.

I took the following workout as an example:

This is a demo workout started from 06:42:55 and ran for 5 laps.

Lap 1: 00:07:30

Lap 2: 00:07:37

Lap 3: 00:24:48

Lap 4: 00:08:05

Lap 5: 00:08:19

The following screen is for “Upload Tracks”:

After you submit the track log, www.webtracker.hk will create an activity which shows your paths in Google Map, displays your lap time, lap distance, paces. It also plots charts for your workout. You can use the “Pace Calculator” to calculate your time for various paces and comparing with your target time.

Monitor shows the details of your tracks.

Show and play the running tracks in Google Map.

Show the lap time and paces.

Each timed lap was labeled.

Show splits of distance, paces and time in every kilometer.

Show your paces which varied with distance and altitude.

Another chart shows your speed with time.

Calculate the target time with the Pace Calculator. You can calculate your time with various paces and adjust your time to meet the requirement.

Adjust your lap time to meet your target.

“Calculate Splits” calculates your splitted time in every kilometer.

If you forget the start time, you can create an activity first by uploading your track log to www.webtracker.hk. In the Monitor, watching the time at the start point:

Watch the start time.

Then, edit the activity, select “Upload Tracks” and enter the start time and lap time. After submit, you will see the result.

Webtracker.hk is able to export your tracks to GPX file and KML file.

You can import the GPX into SportTracks ( http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/ ) , a GPS-enabled exercise logbook.

If you like to view your routes in 3D view, you can download the exported KML file and open it in Google Earth. View your routes on the fly.
