Nonofficial real-time tracking support

Oxfam Trailwalker 2008
Raleigh Challenge Wilson Trail 2008

Terms of Service

"sendGPS" provided on this web site is protected by copyright owned by the webtracker.hk . No express or implied warranty is given to the accuracy or completeness of the information or its appropriateness for use in any particular circumstances. Webtracker.hk is not responsible for any loss or damages whatsoever arising from any cause whatsoever in usage of the software or with this web site.

During the Oxfam Trailwalker 2007, 7 teams of walkers used sendGPS to send their real-time positions to www.webtracker.hk and shown in the following web page.

http://www.webtracker.hk/webtracks/trailwalker2007.php

The tracking of the walkers is quite interesting but we want to do more functions in 2008. This year, we extended the functions of sendGPS and www.webtracker.hk . To make them best fit for support teams and walkers.

Highlights of the extended functions:

1
Support various devices and operation system ( Nokia, Sony Ericsson , Blackberry and Pocket PC with Windows Mobile)
2
Enquiry of walker's positions via SMS or GPRS
3
Show positions in the nearest Distance Post (標距柱). You can check walker's positions in paper maps. You don't need to access Internet.

How it works:

Once you have installed sendGPS for J2ME to your mobile phones, you can send your positions to www.webtracker.hk via GPRS or to yours support team mobile phones via SMS automatically or manually. Your support team can also enquiry your positions via GPRS or SMS.

You can download the sendGPS from http://wap.webtracker.hk

From the above map, it shows the distance posts of the Maclehose Trail from M024 to M030. The red circles are the distance post zone. When you enter the zone, sendGPS will show your current distance post within the circle. You can adjust the radius of the red circle in the setup of sendGPS , go to “Distance Post Radius”. The default value is set to 50m.

sendGPS will also automatically calculate your time left to the nearest check point. It calculates your current position and sum all the distances of the distance posts to the nearest check point.

c. Online - SMS , send position data to support team's mobile phone

Location:

a. Bluetooth , for connection with bluetooth GPS receiver
e.g. BT GPS: btspp://001BC100F64F:1

b. Internal , for connection with Internal GPS

c. Serial , for connection with bluetooth GPS receiver or Internal GPS in pocket PC with Windows Mobile only
e.g. COM: socket:127.0.0.1:20175

a. Request via SMS - The walker's mobile phone will response the current position.

b. Request via HTTP, - The server www.webtracker.hk will reply the requested walker's positions.

After receiving the walker's message . e.g.

Longitude: 114.18495
Fix: 3D
Date: 2007-12-26 21:27:41
Distance Post: 2
0:1:43 left to CP1 with distance 261m
Send from webtracker.hk

You can check the walker's positions through the Distance Posts which are marked on the maps .

Either method has its advantage and disadvantage:

Methods

Advantage

Disadvantage

SMS

No need of server which act as proxy for replying walkers‘s positions. Walker 's mobile phone directly reply position message to support team.

The security setting of most mobile phones will not allow automatically sending SMS. Walkers have to manually reply position message to support team.

HTTP

Most security setting of mobile phone will just asking once for using the HTTP service.

Walkers must keep to sending updated position data to server and the server will act as proxy to reply their current positions to support team. Walker can set timer in sendGPS for automatically sending position data.
